Grace Rice

ORD -- Grace Gertrude Rice, 102, of Ord died Sunday, Oct. 11, 1998, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Ord Christian Church. The Rev. Michael Chase will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ord Memorial Chapel.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Mrs. Rice was born on March 23, 1896, in Springdale Township in Valley County to W.H. and Nancy E. (Timmerman) Cronk. She attended Plain Valley School until the eighth grade.

She married Herman Rice on Oct. 28, 1914, at her parent's home in Valley County. She wrote many poems, including "A Policeman's Wife." Mr. Rice died on Aug. 17, 1963.

Mrs. Rice moved to the NoLo Villa at North Loup in July 1978. She continued to live on her own, cooking and cleaning for herself, until December 1995, when she entered the Valley County Nursing Home.

Survivors include two sons, Walter Hubert Rice and Harwood L. Rice, both of North Loup; 10 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Velma Meese of Ord.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Robert; one infant daughter, Lena; two great-grandsons; five sisters; and three brothers.
