  Frank Smoltz Sr., 82, died Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at his home, 422 N. Buchanan St.  A retired coal miner, Mr. Smoltz had been employed 50 years in southern Illinois mines.
  He was born June 19, 1883 at Pilsen, Czechoslovakia, a son of Joseph and Anna Rozum Smoltz. His wife, the former Anna Hegg, died May 16, 1945. He was also preceded in death by a brother and four sisters.
  Survivors are four sons, Joseph C. of Edwardsville, Frank J. of Granite City, William of Arlington Heights and Louis of Chicago; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
  Mr. Smoltz was a member of CSA Lodge 26 and the Progressive Mine Workers local of Collinsville.
  Visitation will be at the Lesley Marks Funeral Home after 7 p.m. Friday. Final rites will be conducted from the funeral home Saturday at 2 p.m. with interment in Valley View Gardens of Memory.  Dr. Clyde Funkhouser of Lebanon, formerly of Edwardsville, will officiate.

Pallbearers were William Smoltz Jr., Joseph Smoltz Jr., Richard Wiedey Jr., John Burk, Robert Emery and William Schipkowski.
