George apparently spent time either sporadically or permanently at the U.S. National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Montgomery County, now Dayton, between the years 1902 and his death. A notation on his record there states that he was reported having died in Cleveland, April 15, 1908 while on furlough from Barrack 22. Additional notations stated that one half of his pension was to go to his wife, Ellen E. Mitchell, 304 Grand Ave., Cleveland, Ohio but for next of kin he gave the name of his brother, Theodore, who resided at Belmont and Orange Streets in Cleveland. However, his papers were sent to an unamed person at 1912 E. Madison Ave., Cleveland, Ohio.
At the time of his death from "exhaustion" his address was listed as 2889 E. 81st Street, Cleveland. He was buried in the Veterans' Plot in Section 72 at Woodland Cemetery, April 18, 1908. His widow, Ellen E. Mitchell applied for a widow's pension based on his army service, April 30, 1908, which was issued as Certificate #665026 in Ohio. Ellen remained in Cleveland, residing at 2889 E. 81st St., until her death in 1916.
It is unknown for what reason George relocated from Pennsylvania to Cleveland prior to or in 1890 when his invalid pension was issued in Ohio. In civilian life he was a painter, presumably of houses.
