Watauga Democrat Obituary:
Mrs. Gladys Hicks Ward, 77, of Charlie Ward Road, Banner Elk, the Matney community, died Wednesday evening, Oct. 2, 2002, at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville.
She was born Dec. 12, 1924 in Watauga County, a daughter of William and Fronia Presnell Hicks.
Mrs. Ward was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include three sons, Cecil Ward and wife, Barbara, David Ward and wife, Marthana, and Eugene Ward, all of Banner Elk; two daughters, Brenda Hughes and husband, Donnie, of Banner Elk, and Annis Jackson and husband, Cramer, of Sparta; one brother, Henry Hicks of Banner Elk; three sisters, Betty Jo Lael of Spotsylvania, Virginia, Ida Lael of Wilkesboro and Grace Ward of Elizabethton, Tenn. Nineteen grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Hughes Ward; one daughter, Alphea Hollars; one son, Melvin Ward, and two brothers, Senter Hicks and Art Hicks.
Services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Elder John Stafford. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m., prior to the services, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Matney-Liberty Community Cemetery.
