Clement was graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1843, with an A. B. degree, and received an A. M. degree in 1853. He was a lawyer, and a member of the NC House of Representatives in 1860. He married Annette Eliza Lindsay, eldest daughter of Jesse Harper Lindsay of Greensboro, on 10 October 1855. They were living in Fayetteville in 1860. They had three children: Nettie (dates unknown), J. Lindsay Wright (1861-1882) and Clement Gillespie Wright, Jr. (1864-1937).
Clement Gillespie Wright, Sr. enlisted as a private in Co. A, 5th NC Cavalry Regiment, Confederate States Army on 12 May 1862, age 38. He was promoted to full Captain (aide de camp on General Robertson's staff) on 31 Jan. 1863. He was enrolled as a Captain in the 5th NC Cavalry on 3 Aug. 1863, and was transferred to Co. S, 66th NC Regiment on 2 Oct. 1863, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He died in service to his country.
