Amelia Gazeal Ellison was a daughter of Dr. Zachariah Ellison (1786-1821) and his wife Sarah "Sallie" Harper (1789-1858, who later married General Alexander Gray). Her maternal grandparents were Col. Jeduthan Harper (1736-1819), a Soldier of the Revolution, and his second wife Gazeal Parke (1755-1845).

Amelia married Jesse Harper Lindsay (1808-1886), her cousin, at the home of General Gray in Randolph Co., NC on 14 May 1833. They had four children: Annette Eliza Lindsay (1834-1903, married Col. Clement G. Wright, CSA); Ellison H. Lindsay (1836-1847); Sarah Amelia "Sallie" (1839-1920, m. Colonel John Alexander Gilmer, CSA); Jessie, infant daughter (1844-1848).
