Harry Richard McMurdie, of Vacaville, died on Saturday, July 31. He was 80 years old.

Harry was born to Harry M. and Ann McMurdie in Long Beach, Calif. He was the youngest of three children. Shortly after he was born, his family moved to Salt Lake City, where he and his siblings were raised. Harry was drafted into the Army in 1951. He served in the infantry for two years, stationed in Germany. After being honorably discharged, Harry returned to Utah where he met his wife, Sally Jo, at a dance. They were married in 1957 in the LDS Temple in Salt Lake City.

A longtime resident of Vacaville, Harry worked as a machinist at Mare Island in Vallejo, where he retired in 1993 after more than 25 years on the job. He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, photography and ballroom dancing. He was also an avid gardener and loved trains. In his later years, he built an extensive garden railway complete with handmade trestles and miniature towns.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Faye Cox and Darle Fitzgerald.

He is survived by his wife, Sally Jo; his children, David, Michael and Shirley Ann; and seven grandchildren. He was much loved as grandpa, dad, husband and friend.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 7, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 311 Alamo Drive, Vacaville, Calif.
