Obituary for Joseph VanMatre:
The short services of the late Joseph VanMatre of Fayette, were held at the residence of his son-in-law, William Baker at Blanchardville, where the deceased had resided the last two years, having sold his large farm in Fayette Twp. to his two sons, John and Frank. His remains were conveyed to the M.E. Church in Waldwick where the regular services were held with interment taking place in the cemetery near the church. A large attendance came to pay tribute to the departed. The deceased left two brothers Thomas J. of Fayette and Nate of Mineral Point. The 68 year old deceased also left a wife, two sons and two daughters to mourn his passing.
Joseph was born in Ohio in 1832, emigrated from there with his parents, John J. and Mary Van Matre and two older brothers. Peter and Sydney, to where they settled in Lafayette County, Wisconsin on the site of his very large farm. When he was 24 years old he married, settled and lived there for the rest of his life, with the exception of six years in California in the 40's and the last 2 years since disposing of his farm. Black Hawk and his braves made things uncomfortable at the time of the Van Matre's settlement in that section. "Greasy Joe", as he was familiarly known was athletic, fearless and a rifle sure shot, was a terror to the reskins who many times tried to ambush him and secure his scalp. A kind and genial hearted fellow; a true friend; he left many warm friends behind. I. C. B.
