On January 10, 1951, Larry proudly joined the US Army. On July 31, 1954 he was promoted to Sergeant, then served 2 years, 8 months, 15 days of foreign service (Germany). On January 9, 1956, he was honorably discharged, having earned the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Combat Engineer Medal.
Larry then married the love of his life, Mary Magdalene Mahsem on November 7, 1959. Together they went on to raise Mary's three children, Alan J. Mahsem, McFarland, WI; Margaret (Timothy) Kohl, Winter Haven, FL and Mary (Bradley) Seymour, Brownsville, WI.
Larry was very active in his community of McFarland, where he and Mary lived for over 45 years. He joined the McFarland Fire Department in May of 1966. He spent many hours fighting fires, washing the fire equipment, instructing fire personnel, answering rescue calls, marching in parades and working "The Good Old Auction/Chicken Barbecues." Larry was promoted to Fire Captain in 1978 and retired in 1986 having earned the 20 year fire service recognition. Larry was a dedicated Commander of American Legion Post #534 and was a member of VFW Post #10272.
By trade, Larry was a finish carpenter, working with fine materials such as granite, marble and hardwoods. He most enjoyed his work on the construction of the McFarland Historical Museum as well as the McFarland High School gymnasium. He retired from his working career while at Forest Products Research Labs in Madison, WI.
Retirement allowed Larry to answer his true calling, being a grandfather to Joshua James (Susan) Kohl, Jonathan James Seymour, Benjamin Lawrence Kohl, Elizabeth Claire Mahsem and Joseph Alan Mahsem. These years were Larry & Mary's fun times and they enjoyed their grandchildren; building the deck on the house; picking raspberries and apples; and learning to use power tools. The two were also blessed with five great grandchildren, Ivy and Gabriel Kohl of Texas and Eli, Jackson & Zoë Kohl of Wisconsin.
Larry was preceded in death by his wife Mary and they will share a joint Military Funeral Service and burial with military rites to take place at the Wisconsin Veterans Home, King, WI at a later date.
The Veteran's Poppy was very meaningful to both Dad and Mom. The family asks that when you can, please donate to the VFW and wear a poppy with pride.
