Joseph's great granddaughter told me that his middle name was Clay. However, note that his death certificate shows his name as "J.E." and his name is clearly Joseph E. on the 1920 census. I have also been told that his name is Joseph E. on his marriage record to Florence. His father was Henry Clay and he named a son Orval Clay, so perhaps his great granddaughter merely presumed that his middle name was also Clay.
Note that his entry on the 1900 census gives a birth of Oct 1868. His death certificate shows a birth of 1 Oct 1867. His wife Nancy was the informant. Note also that his death certificate states he was born in Brown Co., KY. There is no Brown Co., KY.
He married twice:
(1) Florence E. May on 21 Jun 1894 in Vanceburg, Lewis Co., KY
(2) Nancy Jane Kaut in 1924
Joseph & Florence had three children: Nellie G. (Bobst); Orval Clay; & Raymond Harlan.
