Obituary
Hilton Funeral Home

Roy Linwood Selby, Jr., 75, of Beallsville, MD, after a long battle with cancer, died Saturday, September 14, 2013, surrounded and loved by his family, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was married to Betty Jean Wynne Selby for 54 years.

Born in Germantown, MD, September 6, 1938, he was the son of the late Roy Linwood Selby, Sr. and Frances Leaman Selby.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Rebecca (Becky) Selby Brooks, and his nephew, James (Jody) M. Brooks.

Roy graduated from Poolesville High School in 1956 and married his high school sweetheart, Betty Jean, in 1959. He worked along with his parents in the family-owned business, Selby's Market, founded in 1946. He continued the tradition with his children until it's closing in January 2012. After raising their children in Poolesville, MD, they moved to Beallsville, MD in 1987.

He joined the Upper Montgomery County Volunteer Fire Department at age 18, serving as a volunteer. He was elected to Treasurer of the Corporation and served for many years, becoming a life member. He served as Commissioner for the Town of Poolesville from 1964-1976. As a member of the Mid- Atlantic Food Dealers' Association, he held several offices, working up the ladder until finally serving as Chairman in 1983. He was a member of the Monocacy Lions Club, joining in 1984 and serving as King Lion in 1988-89, receiving the highly honored Melvin Jones Fellow Award in 2001.

Aside from the time dedicated to his life as a grocer, his free time was filled by family and friends. Although not one to want a birthday party, he loved having his grandchildren, surrounding him and on his knees, helping to blow out his candles. Many life-long friendships were built and maintained through his love of golf that he shared with his wife. They were avid golfers at Holly Hills Country Club in Ijamsville, MD.

Surviving besides his wife are his children, Roy (Lin) L. Selby, III and wife, Leslie, Michael R. Selby and wife, Corrine, Bruce E. Selby and wife, Amy, and Lisa W. Selby; seven grandchildren, Darcy Matacio, Courtney Mora (Andy), Roy (Dru) Selby, IV, Charlotte Selby, Addison Selby, Aubrey Selby, and Sean Selby; and numerous nephews and a niece.

The family will receive friends, where he also attended church, from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday, September 19, at Poolesville Memorial United Methodist Church, 17821 Elgin Rd, Poolesville, MD where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 20. Internment will follow in Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Poolesville Memorial United Methodist Church, where he attended, P.O. Box 358, Poolesville, MD 20837 or Upper Montgomery County Volunteer Fire Department, 19801 Beallsville Rd, Beallsville, MD 20839.
