Obituary - With Boy Scouts acting as pallbearers and as a guard of honor, Richard Ryker, of Greenlawn, a member of the Scout organization and a freshman in the Huntington High School, was buried in the St. Philip Neri Cemetery, East Northport, Tuesday morning following services in the St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Northport. The Rev. Charles Caton, assistant rector of the church, officiated.
He was in his sixteenth year, and was born in LaSalle, N.Y. on March 18, 1917. His parents are Edwin B. and Elizabeth Baes Ryker, his father being payroll superintendent of the New York Telephone Company in the Brooklyn office. The family came to Greenlawn seven years ago.
Besides being active in the Scouts, he was also active in baseball and football activities.
During the weekend of January 14, he went to Setauket to visit a friend, Edward Pfeiffer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Pfeiffer, and during the day they were practicing shooting at a target in Pfeiffer's backyard with the .22 caliber single-shot rifle.
The rifle was accidently discharged just as Ryker stepped around in front of his friend, and the bullet, according to the physician, broke his nerve cord, fractured the spinal column, passed through the stomach and lodged in a front rib.
He was rushed to the Mather Memorial Hospital at Port Jefferson Station and lived in that condition for over a week, but he died on Monday. Before he died he absolved his friend from all blame, stating that it was entirely accidental. Only his parents survive.
Also - The funeral of Richard Ryker, the 15-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Ryker of Anders Street was held Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock. The pall bearers were members of his troop of Boy Scouts and Greenlawn, Services were held by Rev. Father Brennan at St. Philip Neri's Church at Northport at 10 o'clock. Burial was in the Catholic Cemetery in East Northport. Richard was accidentally shot at Saturday January 14 and died Sunday morning in the Mather Memorial Hospital of Port Jefferson. He was a freshman in Huntington High School.
