Charles enlisted in the Union Army at age 22, as a Private, on 14 August, 1861, in A Company, 29th Inf. Reg., OH. He received a surgeon's certificate of disability on June 28th 1862, after contracting measles. Re-enlisted in I Co., 2nd PA Vol. Cavalry, wounded and captured at St. Mary's Church by the rebels, and died on 14 November, 1864, of chronic diarrhea at the prison camp, in Florence, Florence Co., SC.
