Local Woman Passes At Moab Hospital

Buried Here Tuesday Afternoon Following Impressive Funeral Services

Mrs. Dena D. Whitney, 59, wife of Wm. F. Whitney of this city died last Saturday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock in the hospital at Moab of heart complications. She had been with her sister Sadie Oliver in Bluff since October 16 to improve her health which has been bad for some time. Her condition became worse and her people there started home with her Wednesday morning and as she couldn't stand the trip she was taken to the Moab hospital Thursday. Her husband and a son Marion were with her when the end came.

Impressive funeral services were held for her in the West Ward Chapel Tuesday afternoon with Daniel B. Crawford of the Bishopric presiding. Speakers were Walter C. Mitchell, John P. Orton and LaVerne Hyatt with the latter reading sentiments from the Stake Primary Board of which she was a member, and from Mrs. Olive Carroll, friend of the family.

The opening and closing songs by the cho8ir directed by Ormon Weight with Irene Marsden at the piano were "O My Father" and "Sometime We'll Understand." Other musical numbers were a violin solo "Herd Girl's Dream" by Mr. Weight; a vocal solo "resignation" by Mary Orton accompanied by Audrey Miller and the song "A Prayer" by a group of Stake Primary Board members.

The opening prayer was offered by Hugh L. Adams, the closing one by Silas J. Ward and the grave was dedicated by S.J. Whitney.

Dena Dalton Whitney was born here on June 9, 1879, a daughter of Jos. P. and Sarah Thornton Dalton, and was a life long resident of this community. Her education was obtained here, at Cedar and in Salt Lake City and she taught school here for a number of years. She was married to Wm. F. Whitney on Oct. 15, 1903. She has served as a teacher and officer in the Sunday school, MIA, Relief Society, DUP organizations and was a member of the Stake Primary Board at the time of her death. She was also active as a $H club leader for several years.

Besides her husband she is survived by five children, Ardath Richardson, Clair, Frank and Elward Whitney of Parowan and Marion Whitney of Salt Lake City; three brothers, Meeks, Carlyle and Claude Dalton of this city; three sisters, Florence D. Benson of Parowan, Sadie Oliver of Bluff and Ella Patterson of Los Angeles. Ten grandchildren also survive her.
