_______________________

He was a veteran of the Civil War. On May 14, 1861, 20 year old John enlisted in Geneva, New York. He served as a Private in Company I of the 33rd New York Infantry. This regiment was known as the Ontario Regiment because it was organized in the northwestern part of the state of New York. The battle at Antietam in 1862 and the battle at Chancellorsville in 1863 are two of the most notable engagements of the 33rd. John was mustered out along with his regiment on June 2, 1863, in Geneva, New York. He re-enlisted on January 11, 1864, and was assigned to Company D of the 5th New York Heavy Artillery. He served as a Private with the 5th until July 19, 1865, when he was mustered out at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, along with his regiment.

John married Susan F. Simonds on February 24, 1864, in New York. In 1879 the Davis family moved to Petoskey where John became a pioneer meat dealer, owning his own market. After operating this business for many years, he sold it and became a representative in this area for a number of large packing houses.

He was a member of Lombard Post, G.A.R.
