The Riggs family came originally from England to Maryland sometime in the seventeenth century. Timothy Riggs moved from Maryland to the Rutherford County, North Carolina area, south of Ashville, North Carolina, where he died about 1790. Timothy had a son named Clisbie Riggs in 1765. Clisbie came somewhere in the areas of Hamblen County, Morristown, Pleasant Valley, Washington County, or Boone Creek about the same time as Ed and Jesse Riggs and Gideon Morris. Clismie married Jane Evans and their children were Ellis, Anna, Polly, Edward, Phoebe, Samuel, and Harvey. Samuel married Elizabeth Chaney. They had a son, Samuel II, who had a son named Roy Riggs. Roy Riggs is a famous genealogist.
