Pelagia was called Pearl by her family. She is the daughter of Wojciech (George) and Maryanna (nee Wojciechowski) Maciejewski. Pearl grew up at 84 Cable Street, Buffalo, New York with her siblings: Teddy, Chester, Mary, Frances, Johnny, Hattie, Frankie and Kay in a neighborhood called 'Kaisertown'.
Pearl married John Rys. They raised their children John, Sophia, Michael and Annette in the City of Buffalo; Elma and back to the City of Buffalo, New York. Pearl was Grandmother to seven Grandchildren and seven Great-Grandchildren.
