John T. Ford was born in Baltiome, MD on 16 Apr 1829, son of Elias Ford. John received his education in the public schools of Baltimore and at one time attended the No6 school on Druid Hill Avenue.

Early on in his life John worked for his uncle in tobaco manufacturing, then he tried selling books but abandoned this as well. in 1851 he returned to Baltimore and John entered a position of business manager for George Kunkel's Nightingale Minstels. He journied on a tour with this theatrical group through the South and West, one of the most profitable tours at that time. John T. Ford engaged in the theater business both in Baltimore and in Washington, DC. He caused three theaters to be built in Washington. The infamous one on 10th street where President Lincoln was assaninated. He also had theaters on 9th street and on Louisiana avenue.

Mr. Ford and his brother were imprisoned in the Capital Prison for 39 days because of the assasination of Lincoln. Then released and fully exonerated. Mr. Ford had a long life in the theater business afterwards.
