Caroline Pickering McGowan's obituary, [with spelling and grammar errors uncorrected] Decatur Independent newspaper, Thurs, Apr 9, 1896, p. 4, col 2 under Corwin news:
Carolyn Pickering was born in Yorkshire England May 27, 1827, died March 28, 1896. She with her parents came to America when about four years of age, settling in Deerfield, Portage Co, Ohio. She was married to Geo. McGowan May 11 [sic 17] 1848. From Ohio they moved Ind. and thence to Michigan, where they finally built them a log house in the midst of the woods and set about clearing up their farm, on which they have since resided. Twelve children were born to them, eleven of whom are living; seven boys and four girls. They, with their father mourn for one whose place can never be filled in their hearts. We can truly say she was loved by all who knew her; thoughtful and considerate for others, ever ready with a kind word and loving deed. Being a faithful member of the church militant for more than forty years, she has now joined the church triumphant. Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church, Lawrence on Monday with interment in Lawrence cemetery. Rev. Reese of Bangor officiated. Hosts of neighbors and friends sympathize and mourn with the afflicted family. The cause of death was fatty degeneration of the heart.
