Dirk Van Ryswyk was born on July 28, 1839, in the Netherlands, the son of Dirk and Arieke (Van Roeland) Van Rijswijk. He married Jenneke "Jennie" Olivier, born on Aug. 9, 1839 at Heukelum, Zuid Holland, Netherlands on Apr. 8, 1861, the daughter of Pieter and Johanna (De Hen) Olivier.

In 1865 they left for America bringing with them their children: Dirk Jan and Pieter. Also accompanying them were Jenneke's father, Pieter Olivier, three brothers, a sister and a cousin. Jenneke's mother, Johanna, also started out with them but became ill, due to an outbreak of Cholera, and passed away enroute while on the ocean. (Approximately 50 people passed away on the voyage.)

After their arrival in Pella, Iowa in the fall of 1865 Dirk was employed helping build the railroad track through town.

The Van Ryswyk's later moved to a farm west of Otley and then to another farm west of Pella.

Other children born to Dirk and Jennie were: Arie, Johanna, Aueke "Orphia", Mathys "Tice" and Jennie.

Dirk died at his home on Union Street in Pella July 16, 1921 at the age of 81 years 11 months and 17 days. By his obituary in the Pella Chronicle he died of Brights Disease but his interment record shows the cause of death to be Diabetes. Funeral services were held July 19th at his home.
