She confessed Jesus Christ at an early age and united with Waters Bluff Methodist Church.
Carnell attended Waters Bluff Elementary School, and graduated from Jackson High School in Winona, Texas in 1939. She also attended Cosmetology of Dallas, Texas and later moved to Los Angeles, California where she attended nursing School.
She met and married Grady Ward in 1941 and from that union a daughter Grace was born.
She moved to Los Angeles, California in 1944 and opened her own Beauty Shop where she worked for thirty years. She then worked for Daniel Freeman Hospital as a Nursing Attendant for eleven years until her retirement in 1986.
She leaves to morn, her daughter, Trace Ward; two granddaughters, Carla Hines Griggs and Yolanda Williamson; on grandson, Dewayne Williamson and five great grandchildren; four brothers, Samuel, Charles Jr., Willie and James Bircher; one half sister, Vernettie Grant, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
