SKOWHEGAN - Arthur E. Palmer, 86, died Sept. 2, 2013, at the Maine Veterans' Home in Augusta. He was born Sept. 12, 1926, in Skowhegan, the son of Frank T. and Jeanette A. (Breingan) Palmer Jr. He was educated in the schools of Skowhegan and graduated from Old Orchard High School in the class of 1944. He lived in Skowhegan until 1942 when his family moved to Old Orchard Beach. He moved back to Skowhegan in July 1997.

Arthur worked at the South Portland Shipyard from November 1944 to April 1945, then worked as a crew clerk for the Portland Terminal Co. from April 13, 1945, to March 1955. He then transferred to Maine Central Railroad Co. as a crew clerk until he was promoted on Aug. 1,1956, to chief crew dispatcher and on Sept. 1,1972, was promoted to transportation assistant until he retired June 30, 1984.

He was a veteran who served in the Army during the Korean War in Co. B 175th Military Police Battalion Nov. 7,1950, to Oct. 30,1952. In-active reserve Oct. 31,1952, to July 15,1956. He served in the Foreign Service for 14 months in Germany. Arthur enjoyed reading.

He is survived by a brother, Millard Palmer, of Crystal River, Fla.; an aunt, Jean Breingan, of Skowhegan; a niece, Kathy Downing, her husband, Richard, and children, of Winthrop; nephew Keith Palmer and his wife, Apri, and children, of St. Albans; and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Frank T. Palmer Jr.; mother, Jeanette A. Palmer; and two brothers, Francis Palmer and Alan Palmer.
