Info contributed by Ralph (#46818403): Born in Hampsread, Queens, NY, came to Beaufort in 1764; wrote his own inscription includes the verse "Praises on tombstones are but idly spent/ A mans good name is his best monument"; (son of Leffert Haughwout & Mary Smith)
Died on the Straits in Carteret County, on the 8th instant, Mr. SAMUEL LEFFERS, Sr. in the 86th year of his age. He was a citizen of that county for 56 years, and led a life devoted to his God and his country. He died with perfect resignation, and even prayed for a release from the toils of this weary pilgrimage. AMICUS.
