Robert was probably born about 1588, most likely in Weyhill Parish, Penton Grafton, Hampshire, England. His parents are not known. About 1613, he married Jane Bent, daughter of Robert Bent and Agnes Gosling. Jane and Robert had seven children, all probably born at Penton-Grafton. Jane died in 1631 and was buried at Saint Michael and All Angels in Weyhill on August 30, 1631. Robert Plympton had also died by 1638, and was buried in Saint Michael and All Saints churchyard at Weyhill. It is probable that of their seven children, only two, Elizabeth and Thomas survived to be adults; as they were living with their grandmother, Agnes Bent in 1638, and they emigrated with her to New England in 1639. They, along with Richard Barnes, were also the only three grandchildren named in her will.
