Thomas Brown lll was born April 21, 1795 in Brownsville/Foxville, Fredrick County, Maryland the oldest son of Thomas Brown Jr. and Susannah Rebecca (Harman) Brown. He was baptized October 11, 1795 in Apple's Church in Thurmont, Maryland, his sponsors being Christian Herrmann/Harman and his wife Anna Maria who were his aunt and uncle. Christian Herrmann/Harman was the brother of his mother Susannah Rebecca Harman.
He is the brother of Elizabeth Brown born in 1796/7 who married Daniel Hawver/Hauver/Hauber, Mary Brown who was born in 1797/8 and married Christian Getz/Gates, Johannes (John) Brown who was born in 1799 and died in 1821, George Brown who was born in 1803 and married Julia Ann Scott, Catherina/Catherine who was born in 1805 and married Daniel McAfee, both Catherine and Daniel died in Miami County, Ohio and are buried in the Bethel cemetery, the name on the headstone is spelled McEfee; Susan/Susannna/Anna Brown who was born in 1806/7 and married John Barenheison who likely changed his name to Barnes, Sarah A. Brown who was born in 1812 and married William Martin, William H. Brown who was born in 1813 and married Catherine Brown, daughter of William Brown Sr., and Christian Brown who was born in 1815 and married Susannah Shaull.

At the age of 19, Thomas Brown lll served in the Maryland Militia and fought in the War of 1812 at the battle of Bladensburg that took place on August 24, 1814, and the battle of Baltimore that took place September 12, 1814. This also could have been what is referred to as the battle of North Point. It is possible that he was the same Thomas Brown who was the Brigade Wagon Master with the First Brigade Maryland Militia. This role would later prove useful when making the journey from Western Maryland to Bethel Township, Miami County, Ohio as part of an early migration of settlers heading west by wagon train to open up and settle new territories in Ohio. He married Susan McAfee a native of Pennsylvania April 9, 1818 in Washington County, Maryland and most likely lived in either Fredrick County or Washington County near relatives. They had three children: John Brown Sr. born in Fredrick County June 25, 1819, Thomas Brown, and David W. Brown. Thomas Brown lll moved from Maryland with his family to Bethel Township, Miami County, Ohio in either 1836 or 1838. The Centennial Biographical History of Seneca, County, Ohio states he moved in 1836, and a History of Miami County, Ohio states he moved in 1838.

He died December 27, 1854 in Bethel Township, Miami County, Ohio and is buried in the Bethel Cemetery with a veteran's symbol next to his headstone indicating that he fought in the War of 1812. His wife Susan survived him by 13 years and died May 16, 1867 at the age of 78.
