Charles James Tuma was born November 3, 1925, on the family farm in Webster Township, Rice County, Minnesota, to Albert J. And Anna (Simek) Tuma. He was baptized and confirmed at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Veseli and attended parochial school and District 45 county school. At the age of 11, he moved with his family to a farm at Union Lake. After his education he worked on the farm until being drafted into the US Army in 1945. He served in Hawaii and following his honorable discharge returned to the farm. He married Dolores Marie Marek on May 24, 1949, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lonsdale. After marriage they farmed at Union Lake near Northfield until moving to Northfield in 1975. Charlie worked for B&G Implement in Dundas for 5 years, and in 1980, began working for Paul Fink Construction as a carpenter. He remained a carpenter until retiring.

Charlie is a member of the Church of St. Dominic, a former member of IC in Lonsdale, and a 60+ year member of American Legion Post #586 in Lonsdale. He enjoyed fishing, fixing things, working, going to the lake home at Lake Placid near Pillager, and especially spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Dolores; 3 children and their spouses: Charlene and Marty Burger of Northfield, Maynard and Kathy of Northfield, Luanne and Michael Reilly of Brighton, Michigan; daughter-in-law, Lee Norman of Brooklyn Park; 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren; one brother, Francis (Marion) Tuma of Lonsdale; 5 sisters-in-law: Betty Tuma of Bloomington, Angela Tuma of Montgomery, Ruth (Harold) Johnson of Brooklyn Park, Sister Johnette Marek of Oskosh, Wisconsin, Alice (Art) Hutchens of Waseca; 2 brothers-in-law: Wilfred (Alvina) Marek of Lonsdale, Arnold Schultz of Wells; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his sons Gregory in 1966, Dennis in 1993 and Steven in 1996, his granddaughter Jennifer Tuma in 1996; his parents; his in-laws, John and Ludmilla Marek; his brothers Albert and John; and his sister-in-law Edith Schultz.

Charlie passed away at home with his wife and family by his side on Sunday morning, September 1, 2013, at the age of 87.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30AM Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at the Church of St. Dominic in Northfield. Interment with Military Honors will be in Calvary Cemetery, Lonsdale. Casket bearers will be Carrie Schliemann, Andy Tuma, Craig Tuma, Joe Tuma, Mike Tuma and Nicole Tuma. Visitation will be 4-7PM Tuesday, September 3, 2013, at the Benson & Langehough Funeral Home. Visitation will continue at the church on Wednesday one hour prior to the service.
