Born to Methodist circuit minister, Byron "Gus" August McKnight and his wife, Viola Lee "Ola" Suddath, Joseph Warren McKnight was the youngest of 11 children. Joe was predeceased by his siblings, Viola "Frances" (Wherry), William Milton, Augustus "Gus" Hester, Paul James, Gladys Elizabeth (Galloway), Thomas E, John B, twins Woodrow and Wilson, and Virginia Lee (Moudy).

Joe was married twice. His first marriage to Mary Evelyn Jones (1923-?, Winslow, AR) produced a son, James Michael McKnight (1942-2022) and daughter, Rosemary. During World War II, he met and married his second wife, "Ebe" Olympia Ricco of Italy. They have one daughter (a retired teacher, still living). Joe served in the military as an enlisted man, earning a battle field commission in southern Italy. Following the war, he earned a full commission and completed his career as a Major in the US Army. Following that he worked as a federal employee (civil service), including for the 509th Signal Battalion, US Army Communications Command at Camp Darby outside of Livorno, Italy, where he resided with his wife and daughter.

His wife preceded him in eternal rest. Joe lived long enough to see his daughter happily married. He passed away peacefully and received special dispensation to be buried with his Catholic wife in their local cemetery.
