The Old Lady Was A More Deadly Shot: Woman, 60, Wins Gun Duel With Son-in-Law, BEATTYVILLE, KY., March 7 1955 (AP) A 60 year old woman, after surviving a gun battle with her 31 year old son-in-law, was due in court today to explain details of the slaying. No charges were filed against Mrs. Mattie Brandenburg, Sunday when Delton Vanderpool was shot to death at her home. Returning from a trip to Ohio, the Lee County farmer stopped at the Brandenburg home where his wife was staying overnight and exclaimed: "I'm a-gonna do what I came here to do." Then, said Sheriff Hampton Palmer, the farmer whipped out a pistol and began firing at Mrs. Brandenburg who fled into a closet. She emerged a moment later with another pistol and returned the fire, the sheriff added. Vanderpool was hit twice. Vanderpool ran from the house but died about 400 yards from the scene. He had been hit in the chest and knee.
