Losey & Dean mortuary record states they received the body of James Curo from Cliffs, Washington on the evening train of Monday, August 1, 1910.
ROW AT CURO'S.
On Monday night a row occurred at Curo's ranch between several Indians and white men. From information imparted by Wesley Curo who was in the city on Wednesday it seems that the Indians came there and wanted whiskey and being refused the red skins proceeded to help themselves, whereupon James Curo objected and a fight ensued in which Mr. Curo was getting the worst of it when his son, John Curo, took a hand in the fight taking a musket away from the Indian who was pounding his father and brought it down with such force on Mr. Indian's head as to bury the lock of the gun in his skull, and it is reported that he has since died. Considerable uneasiness has been felt by the whites living on the border of the reservation over the affair but the Indians claim no trouble will ensue further than that they will kill Curo sooner or later for the deed. How it Occurred
James Curo, at whose place occurred the row mentioned in last week's paper, was in the city on Wednesday and to a reporter stated that the true version of the affair had not been published. On the morning in question he says a squad of Indians more or less intoxicated came to his place and that one of them went into his warehouse and took a sack of flour. Mr. Curo remonstrated and took it away from the Indian whereupon he was assaulted and knocked down, his son at this juncture came to his rescue and struck the Indian over the head with a pair of gun barrels, breaking the red skin's skull. The injured individual was taken into the house, medical assistance called but nothing could be done for him and he died. John Curo, who killed the Indian came at once to Brainerd as the Indians are much excited and will do him bodily harm if he is caught by them. (Brainerd Dispatch, 31 August 1894, p. 4, c. 4)
