John Roberts Zachary passed away February 22, 2011, at the age of 95 in Columbia, S.C.

John was born February 12, 1916, in Cordele, GA, to the late Luta Mae and James Edmund Zachary. He was married to Ann Embry Zachary for 52 years until her death in 2000.

John attended Boys High School in Atlanta. In 2010, at the age of 94, he attended a reunion there representing the Class of 1934. After high school he enlisted in the Georgia National Guard and provided protection during the Textile Strike in 1934.

Shortly thereafter he joined Roosevelt's Civilian Conservation Corps and was dispatched to Highlands, NC, to build roads and cut trees destroyed by the chestnut blight. Mr. Zachary served his country during World War II with the Eight Air Force, 82nd Fighter Squadron, 78th Fighter Group. An assistant crew chief on P-38, P-47 and P-51 aircraft, he was stationed at Duxford Air Force Base in England for 3 1/2 years. John's unit provided fighter protection for the B-17 airplanes on missions including Normandy in Northern France, Air Offensive Europe, Ardennes and the Rhineland. His unit was awarded the Distinguished Unit Badge, and he was awarded the EAMET Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

John worked for Hartford Fire Insurance Group for 35 years. Upon retirement he took a position with Edens Turbeville Insurance Agency.

He was a member of: The Honorable Order of the Blue Goose, Executive Club, Golden K Kiwanis Club, First Nighters Club, Duxford Air Force Base Association, Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum, the N.C. Historical Society and the Celebrate Freedom Foundation. He was a Sunday school teacher, member of United Methodist Men's Club, served on the administrative council board at Wesley Memorial U.M.C. and was an associate member of Washington Street United Methodist Church.

He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne Z. and Russell E. LaVoy of Atlanta, Elaine Z. and Larry McElyea of Columbia; grandchildren, Zachary and Laura LaVoy, both of Atlanta, John and Russell McElyea, both of Columbia, Scott McElyea; great-grandchildren, Faith and Grant McElyea, all of Charlotte.

Funeral service is 1 p.m. Saturday, February 26, 2011, at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Friday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
