Francis moved around, because in 1862, he went south to County Wicklow to work on the new Vartry water scheme, which was to supply the city of Dublin with fresh water from the Vartry Reservoir. While there, he met and married his wife Mary Byrne in 1865, from a local farming family in Sleamaine.
With the end of the works in 1868, Francis returned to live in the city of Dublin, and work as a driver on the Dublin Corporation steam rollers. Some of his sons and grandsons followed him into this line of work.
Francis Martin died in Dublin in 1900, aged 67.
