Carl Koch Brillion News October 23, 1908

It is with the profoundest sorrow, that we must chronicle today, the sudden death at home of his daughter, Mrs. Albert Jensen, at Sheboygan, of Carl Koch Sr., at the age of 68 years. The cause of death was paralysis. He had been ailing for some time but not confined to bed and when he went for the visit from which he was not to return alive, there was no expectation that death could be lurking so near.

Decedent was born in Brandenburg, Germany, in 1840. He came to this country in 1867, and was married the same year at Manitowoc to the widow now surviving him. After living there, working at his trade, mason, for eleven years, the young couple purchased and settled upon the Joe Tikalsky farm near our city, but in 1897, sold out and came to Brillion where Mr. Koch went into the hardware business in partnership with Peter Rank. The partnership was dissolved a few years later, and in 1902, he retired from active business, his sons Charles and Will taking the management of the business off his hands. Since then he has worked at his old trade occasionally, also holding various public offices and for over ten years has been the able and diligent local correspondent of the Appleton Volksfreund.

Besides the widow, he is survived by four sons, William, John, Charles and Edward, all living here, and one daughter, Mrs. Albert Jensen at Sheboygan. Three brothers, William and Herman living here, and Julius, mayor of Berlin, Wis., also survive him.
Probably few deaths in recent years cause the people of our community keener pang of sorrow than the departing of the genial, kind hearted old man. He wished to be, and was everybody's friend. His heart beat too warm for enmity. As a citizen he stood in the front rank. He always strove for what was best for his community and as he lies now wrapped in his last eternal slumber, after a life of honest toil an usefulness, we can honestly voice the sentiments of all his old friend when we say, and what more can we say, –he was a well beloved man.
