Sister Carmen Atkinson, 89, OSF, died Feb. 12 at Assisi House.
Sister Carmen had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 70 years, and was preparing to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee.
Sister Carmen was born in Wilmington, Del., and entered the congregation in 1932. She earned a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in educational administration. She ministered in elementary and secondary education both as teacher and guidance counselor.
Sister Carmen ministered for 56 years in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. She began her teaching career at St. Katherine School, and from 1954 to 1959 she was principal of St. Peter Claver School.
Sister Carmen ministered at The Catholic High School of Baltimore, Towson Catholic High School, and also served as a parish visitor at St. Anthony Parish, Gardenville. She ministered for 12 years in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and taught at St. Maria Goretti High School. She served at Our Lady of Angels Convent, Aston, and moved to Assisi House in 1997.
She also taught in Wilmington, serving at St. Thomas School and Corpus Christi School.
Services: Nieces, nephews, and her Franciscan family.
Service: 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Christian Wake service, Assisi House, 609 S. Convent Road, Aston, followed by viewing 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial: Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Aston.
