Chester Monroe was the son of Edwin J. Monroe and Hester (Werdman) Monroe. He was born in Uniontown, Kentucky. The family then returned to Point Township, Posey County, Indiana, to a farm near Chester's grandfather, James Monroe, for a few years. By 1910, Chester's father moved the family to Saline County, Illinois. He was remarried by this time with several more children. Chester began working as a laborer and migrated to Henderson County, Kentucky, where he married his first cousin, Leona Williams. The couple had three children. They migrated from Henderson to Evansville, Indiana, where Chester lived out the remainder of his life.
