John died in one of the deadliest mine disasters in West Virginia history. On April 28, 1914, the Eccles No. 5 mine exploded killing 174 miners. The No. 6 Eccles mine killed 9 miners from the "Blckdamp" that was created when the No. 5 exploded. A total of 183 miners were lost that fateful day.
