OLD TOWN - Eugene "Gene" Roland Simon, 82, died peacefully surrounded by family Aug. 25, 2013, at his residence. He was born Aug. 22, 1931, in Old Town, a son of David and Eugenie (St. Pierre) Simon.

Gene proudly served his country for over 42 years, having served with the United States Air Force during the Korean War and retired August 1991 from the Maine Air National Guard as Senior Master Sgt.

His smile, charisma and charm warmed every person he met and he would give anything he had to those in need. He loved time spent outdoors and cherished those times with those he loved. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping trips and traveling. In later years, these times became an opportunity for him to teach his grandchildren to hunt, fish, shoot and to respect the outdoors. These lessons became lessons of life. Gene was a member of the Fr. Druilete Knights of Columbus of Old Town.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Cora (Belanger) Simon; two sons, Stephen Simon and his wife, Sandra, of Hermon and Gary Simon and his fiancée, Karen Cyr, of Greenbush; a daughter, Karen Franco and her husband, Raymond, of North Berwick; three grandchildren, David Simon and Alexis and Olivia Franco; a brother, Randolph Seymour; a sister, Pauline Rand of Old Town; and many special nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three bothers, Donald, Walter and Robert "Bert" Simon; sister, Rose Cates; and a special nephew, Robert Simon Jr.

Burial, with military honors, will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Old Town. (Bangor Daily News 8/27/2013 & Birmingham Funeral Home)
