In 1870 he, his parents, two siblings, and five boarders lived in Lake Township (now the southwest part of Chicago), Cook County, IL.

In 1880 he, his parents, two siblings, his paternal grandfather, and a boarder, 37-year-old William McWhinn, lived in Plymouth, CA. His father worked as a carpenter and William as a placer miner.

In 1910 he and his wife and their six children lived in a place they were renting at 306 North Tenth Street in Sacramento, CA. He worked as a carpenter in a railroad shop.

In 1930 he and his second wife and three children--his two youngest from his first marriage and their son--lived in an apartment they were renting for $60 a month in the home of Dr. Cyrus Haines at 1331 L Street in Sacramento.
