Condgon Family History: By: Alice Crane

Father (Charles Ulysses Congdon) born in Blue Earth County, Minnesota, July 4, 1869. His father had come to America from Ireland, with several brothers, but he was originally of Scottish origins. (This is the story that Alice heard, so John Congdon might have left from Ireland not Wales or Scotland and she thought it was her Grandfather that came to America, that she misunderstood.) His mother (Cynthia Pullen) had been married to Henry Davis and they had 4 children, Mr. Davis was killed in the Civil War and she then married Benjamin Congdon who was much older and had 8 children of his own. Benjamin Congdon and Cynthia (Pullen) (Davis) Congdon had three children together, Dora Ann Congdon whom married Odessa DeWitt Boardman, Benjamin Franklin Congdon, and my father the youngest (Charles Ulysses Congdon). Cynthia died at an early age.

Charles Ulysses Congdon learned the trade of putting railroad engines together and was a master mechanic. He was sent to different railroad shops in the west to Assemble Compound Engines. He died of Pneumonia on March 19,1922.

Mother (Margaret (White) Congdon) was born in Marion County, Iowa near Pella Iowa, February 21 1865. There were five girls and five boys in this family. Her family moved, when she (Maggie) was a small girl, to Cass County, Iowa. When she was young lady she went to Western Kansas to live with her oldest sister and family, the Roland Finley family. Mr Finley's homesteaded south of what is now Oberlin, Kansas. He helped organized Decatur County and was one of the counties officials.

Charles Congdon and Margaret White were married in Goodland, Kansas on March 30, 1898. They had four children, William Benjamin, Dora Alice (Me), Robert Eugene, and Helen Mae.
