Samuel Kenneth Long, 91, Martinsburg, formerly of Bakers Summit, rural Roaring Spring, died Wednesday morning at the home of his son, David and family, with whom he had resided for the past 18 years, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Bakers Summit, son of the late D. Palmer and Frances (Hinkle) Long. He married Norma P. Kyler on June 8, 1946, in Bakers Summit, and she preceded him in death April 7, 1995.
Surviving are a son, David and wife, Dixie, with whom he resided; four grandchildren: Kahl and wife, Kristy, of Windber, Tanner and wife, Dawn, of Mountain Top, Spencer of Shippensburg and Kelsey of Woodbury; four great-grandchildren whom he adored: Kyler, Kollin, Ashley and Kenley; and a brother, David P. of Roaring Spring.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kirsti Ann Long, in 1978.
Ken was a 1939 graduate of Morrison Cove High School, Martinsburg. He had formerly owned and operated S.K. Long General Merchandise store, Bakers Summit, for 49 years, where he also served as postmaster for 43 years until the closure of the post office in 1989.
As one of many of our country's "Greatest Generation," Ken was a WWII veteran, serving in the U.S. Army Air Force with the 20th Air Force, 16th Bombardment Squadron, 16th Bombardment Group in Guam. He retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1981 as a chief master sergeant with 39 years of total service.
Ken was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Martinsburg. He was a member of Murray-Appleman American Legion Post 147, Roaring Spring. He enjoyed spending time with his friends at the Martinsburg BCO's "University Think Tank and Learning Center," where he served as the chief philosopher and local historian.
Friends will be received from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Martinsburg. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at the church, Pastors Ralph W. Hamer and Scott E. Schul officiating. Interment with full military honors accorded by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard will follow at Holsinger Cemetery, rural Roaring Spring.
