The Confederates took him into custody as a traitor and sentenced him to serve the remainder of the war north of the Ohio River. He then joined the 145th Indiana Unit whose job was guarding the Railroads. The war ended and the 145th Indiana unit mustered out at Cuthbert, GA.
He may have been sick and possibly died not long after returning home to Ellijay, GA.
According to the Gilmer Historical record, Michael and first wife Janice are buried at this family cemetery. Only three markers have names, Robert Teague, Nancy Chastain Teague, and Lydia Teague.
