Johannes Sackmann, resident of Fallon Flat since 1910, passed away at his home Saturday, May 21, after an illness of more than five weeks caused by pleurisy.
Johannes Sackmann was born November 25, 1858, at Wittenberg, Besarabien, Russia, the son of Johannes and Kathrina Sackmann. He attended the common schools at Wittenberg until 1873 and later engaged in farming. In 1879 , he moved to Kulm, Russia, where he was united in marriage to Christena Schmidt in 1880.
They lived in Kulm until 1891, when they immigrated to the US, settling on a farm near Coldwater, ND. In 1910 the family moved to Fallon Flat, where they have since resided. He was a member of the Lutheran Church until 1910, then joining the Congregational Church.
Surviving relatives include his wife, four daughters, Freedricka, Mrs Christena Schilling, Mrs Louise Stickell, and Mrs Jacob Stickel of Fallon, and six sons, Jacob of New Leipzig ND, Martin of Missoula, Adam of Culbertons, and Andrew, Gottlieb, and Fred of Fallon. Two sisters, Mrs Barbara Rothfusz of Ashley, ND and Mrs Elizabeth Strobel of Marsh, and two brothers, Martin and Jacob of Fallon, also survive. Five children, Louisa, Christena, Barbara, Johannes, and Nathaniel, preceded their father in death.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock at the Fallon Flat Congregational Church with the Rev A Hausauer of Plevna officiating, and burial was made in the Fallon Flat Community cemetery. Pallbearers were Gottlieb Gaub, Louie Strobel, Fred Haidle, Bill, Haidle, Raymond Ruff, and Arndt Strobel. Flower girls were Clara and Ruby Sackmann, granddaughters of the deceased.
Mr. Hausauer used for his text in German, Genesis, 12:v.2, and the English text was Psalm 15:15. Four hymns were sung by the congregation. Out of town relatives in attendance at the funeral services were Mr and Mrs Adam Sackmann and family of Culbertson, Mr and Mrs Jack Sackmann and family of New Leipzig, and Mr and Mrs Martin Sackmann of Missoula.
