Bamberg, four men fatally injured early Thursday when the car they were in when out of control and crashed on a bridge. Bamberg corner can Formby said the car was traveling east on South Carolina Highway 217 at approximately 1:30 AM when the driver lost control of the car.

Formby said he and state highway patrolman John H .Hunnicut, who was at the scene, have determined that the car. Driven by Harvey Smoke, 26,of Ehrhardt was traveling at a high rate of speed.

Formby said Donald H Searson 26, of Smoke's was thrown from the car and that it took approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours to free the other three man who was trapped in the car.

John F.Vanadoe, 36 of Lodge and Dennis W. Cope, 30, of Cope also was killed.

The Colleton County rescue squad and the Bamberg County rescue squad was on the scene Formby said the car was demolished.

The funeral for John F. Varnadoe,30,of Cope,a construction worker,who died July 22,1982 will be at 4 P:M today in Carters Ford Baptist Church,directed by Herndon and Sons Funeral Home.

He was born in Colleton County, a son of Edward Henry and Julia Smoke Varnadoe. He was an Army veteran and a member of Carter Ford Baptist Church.

Surving are a son John K.Varnadoe of North Carolina, four brothers Edward H.Varnadoe Jr.;of Greencove Springs Florida. Richard Varnadoe of Ehrhardt and Thomas Varnadoe and Joseph Varnadoe both of Lodge.;four sisters Dorothy Ater of Ehrhardt and Anne Fender, June Myers and Alice Martin of Lodge.
