In Loving Memory of Anita Alfieri Surber

God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be.
So he put his arms around you and whispered, ''come with me.''

With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass away.
Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay.

A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us, he only takes the best.

ANITA SURBER, of Bellevue, passed away peacefully with her devoted husband & family by her side on Monday, August 12, 2013. She was 88 years of age.

Anita was born on October 2, 1924 in Pittsburgh, PA the daughter of Kate and Peter Alfieri & the sister of Al Alfieri who preceded her in death 14 years ago. She was raised in Pittsburgh, PA & graduated from Westinghouse High School.

After graduation she worked at Westinghouse, she then moved to Florida to work in administrative positions on Military Bases through the end of World War II. In the fall of 1946 she followed her parents who had moved to Seattle & lived in the Greenlake community.

In the spring of 1947 she met her husband Karl while attending a dance at the Trionon Ballroom in Seattle. She often said; "all he did was walk across the dance floor and ask me to dance". While dating she was working at Crane Plumbing & he was attending the U of W. Her mother often told Anita that she would run into him at the grocery store in the cheese department commenting "I saw that nice young man again". They were married on March 20th 1948 and just celebrated their 65thwedding anniversary.

She stayed home to raise 5 children until their eldest went off to college and then returned to work completing a 21 year telecommunications career which included Kelley's Telephone Answering Service & Overlake Hospital. During her career she witnessed several major changes in this industry that included the emergence of the pager & the transition of the classic cord switchboard to the invention of Tascom; computerization which automated the entire switchboard process.

Anita's biggest love was always her family. The more the merrier & the louder the better! She originally wanted 12 girls, but settled for 3 girls and two boys. She often told them she wanted all of her children living within 5 miles of her & her wishes were granted to the point the family renamed Coal Creek Parkway to Surber Blvd.

She loved the arts, gardening & was president of the Garden Club. While the children were growing up she took many classes at Lake Washington Votech where she excelled in ceramics, pottery and upholstery. Her youngest son once asked "mommy are you ever going to graduate?" Caring about her neighborhood she felt it needed permanent entrance signs, so she raised money making ceramic glass votives which she sold to her neighbors. Two brick signs still mark the entrances of Mockingbird Hill where they have lived since 1958.

Everyone who knew Anita & anyone she encountered always heard the same response when asked "how are you?" "Better than Terrific!". In later years she would respond "Tasmigorical!"

''We will never be the same as we were before this loss, but are Ever so much better for having had something so great to Lose.''
Leigh Standley

Anita is survived by her husband Karl Surber, their children: Catherine, husband James; Karan; Bruce, wife Debora; Claudia; Scott, wife Jan; grandchildren: Cynthia, Allison, Axel, Courtney, Christopher, Anita, Katie, Austin, Natalie; great-grandchildren: Dru, Frances & Ellie

A Private Service will be held at Tahoma National Cemetery

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice c/o Evergreen Health Foundation- 12040 NE 128th St. MS #5-Kirkland, WA 98034-3098. Evergreen Health Foundation 425-899-1900.
