Lewis M. Chapman, aged 94, was found dead in his bed at 217 Cherokee street Friday night, and circumstances attending his death decided the coroner to hold his body until today to await developments.
Chapman is a veteran of two wars, the Mexican and civil, and has been living with the Stewart family. Friday night the coroner was notified of his death. He heard so many conflicting stories that an investigation was started. Sadie Banker of 209 Delaware street informed the official that Chapman stated if anything ever happened to him he wanted her to have his property. On the other hand, the Stewarts claimed he had no property and they were taking care of him for his pension.
Should nothing further develop the remains will be buried in Mount Muncie at 2 o'clock this afternoon.
From The Leavenworth Times, Sunday, April 15, 1900.
