William (Bill) Thayer, 61, passed away peacefully Thursday August 15, 2013 at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare.

He was born in Rome on May 23, 1952, the son of the late Oliver Thayer and Mildred (Smith) Thayer-Ulmer. On November 28, 1970, he was united in marriage with Mary King, a blessed union of almost 43 years. He was employed by the Oriskany Central School District for 31 years.

His passions were classic cars, building model cars and "tinkering" in the garage. After his retirement in 2008, he enjoyed his daily lunches at the Oriskany Diner with his buddies "at the round table." His favorite pastime was spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren, including family vacations, cookouts, trivia nights and holidays.

Bill is survived by his beloved family; his wife Mary; his children, Janice Mancuse, Billy Thayer, JoAnna Thayer and Luke Mazur, all of Rome; his grandchildren, Ryan, Joshua and Kelly Thayer, and Camryn and Jacob Mancuse; his brothers, sisters and their spouses, Barbara (Bill) Brewer of Ilion, Susan Elia of Florida, Thom (Carol) Thayer of Texas, Ed (LouAnn) Thayer of Oriskany, Brenda (Mark) Bigelow of Wampsville, Ron (Missy) Thayer of Holland Patent; his sisters-in-law and spouses, Elaine (Bruce) Longo of Livonia, Janice Woodworth of New Hartford, Peggy (Paul) LoGalbo of Vestal; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents; he was predeceased by his step-father, Paul Ulmer, and his in-laws, Pete and Leona King and Art Woodworth.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to Faxton-St. Luke's Regional Cancer Center, especially Dr. Desai, Dr. Vakios and their staff, the 6th floor nursing staff and the Palliative Care Team at St. Luke's. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services will be Monday, 11:00 a.m. from Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, Forty Main Street, Whitesboro, and 12:00 p.m. at St. Peter's Church, Rome, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated. Interment will be at the convenience of the family at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro. Calling hours are Sunday from 2:00-5:00 p.m.
