Killed by the falling of the Masonic Lodge in Bamberg.

Shortly after the war, during an equinoctial gale-September and October storms were not known as 'Florida' hurricanes in those days --. the building was blown down while a community dance was in progress. Hattie Brabham, Sadie Hoffman, Emma Rentz, Charlie Stewart, Charley Simmons, Elmer Saunders and Angus Brabham were killed and a number of other children were injured. The terrible disaster, bringing sorrow and anguish to so many homes, brought also serious cleavage in the community. Some saw Divine punishment visited because the Evil of dancing was permitted; others that God sought thus to focus attention on a godless teacher [believed to be an O'Quinn] who imbibed with godless friends in a barroom.

From Many years after : a bit of history and some recollections of Bamberg with appendix of data concerning a few Bamberg County families and their connections
