Wealthy Philadelphian Had Been Ill for Some Time
Philadelphia, April 15 - Dr. Norton Downs, millionaire society man and international cricketer, shot and killed himself this afternoon in the library of his home at Three Tuns, near Ambler, Mrs. Downs, who was Miss Phoebe McKean, a member of on of Philadelphias oldest and most exclusive families, was with him at the time.
No motive for the suicide is given. It was known, however, that he had been in poor health for some time, recently returning from French Lick Springs, where he had gone in search of relief. He was about 50 years of age.
Servants heard the sound of a revolver shot about 2:30 in the afternoon. About the same time they heard Mrs. Downs screaming. They ran into the library and saw Dr. Downs lying on the floor, face downward... One of the servants hurried to the telephone and summoned Dr. D.W. Shelley, the family physician, and Dr, C,B, Hough, When they arrived, they declared that death had been almost instantaneous.
