Joe Burnett Schafer, 75, a resident of Deming, died Sunday evening in Gila Regional Medical Center. He was born May 7,1913, in Pinos Altos.

Joe served with the United States Navy during World War ll. He married Emily "Millie" Fletcher in 1951 and moved to Deming from Hanover the following year.

He was retired from the Asarco concentrator in Deming.

Joe was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

He was past commander of Disabled American Veterans and until his death was serving as chaplain.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill Schafer in 1977; and George Schafer inn 1988.

Survivors include his wife, Emily, of Deming; three sisters, AliceMajalca of Hanover, Lucy Salais of Anaheim, CA, and Margaret Nutter of West Covina, CA; and several nieces and nephews.

Casket bearers were: Joe Ruiz, Thomas Ryan, Gustavo Salais, Bill Wolf, John Gutierrez and R.Y. Gomez.
Honorary bearers were: members of veterans organizations and his remaining friends.
