Portland restaurateur and civic leader W. Page Yaw, Jr., proprietor of Yaw's Top Notch and son of the Northeast Portland restaurant's founder, died Saturday in a Portland hospital of a coronary embolism following unrelated surgery. He was 58 and lived at 14504 NE Rose Parkway. Funeral will be 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in Caldwell's Colonial Mortuary. Entombment will be in Portland Memorial Mausoleum. Born in Bellingham, Wash., Mr. Yaw moved to Portland with his family as a child. He began his restaurant career when he was 10, working for his father, who founded the well-known Hollywood district establishment in 1926. Mr. Yaw was a regular summer employee of the restaurant as a teenager. In those early years the hamburger house was enlarged several times, but remained in the same general location. In recent years, Mr. Yaw opened similar establishments in Raleigh Hills (Yaw's Raleigh West), and in the Gateway District (Yaw's Ham-Bur Beef). In 1948, Mr. Yaw became vice president and general manager of the Hollywood restaurant and in January 1967 was made president of the corporation. In May 1967, he became vice president of the National Restaurant Association; in 1968 president, and in 1969, chairman of the association's board of directors. He is past president of the Associated Restaurants of Oregon and at the time of his death was on the board of the Restaurants of Oregon Association. He also served with the U.S. Office of Emergency Preparedness and was heading the Cancer Fund for Multnomah County. Mr. Yaw was a member of the national crusade committee of the American Cancer Society for three years; chairman for two years for Multnomah County's Crusade in the Oregon Division and for four years was a chairman of the Pay Less Golf Classic. After holding office with the National Restaurant Association, Mr. Yaw served on the Henessey Award Committee, a committee formed to evaluate the kitchens and food preparedness for the Air Force. This assignment took him all over the world. Mr. Yaw is past president of the Hollywood Boosters, Hollywood Lions Club and the Northeast Optimist Club of Portland. He had been a member of the Northeast YMCA since 1926, serving on the YMCA board in 1952. He was a director of the Aero Club of Oregon and was a member of Friendship Lodge No. 160 AF&AM, Shrine, Royal Order of Jesters, Cyclones, Multnomah County Sheriff's Posse, Portland Executives, Portland Yacht Club and the Columbia-Edgewater Country Club. Mr. Yaw is survived by his mother, Grace W.; wife, Georgia B.: daughter, Georganne Y. Barr, son, Stephen P. Yaw, sister, Barbara Y. Eldridge, and eight grandchildren.
