Jack attended St. Boniface School and Reitz High School. After retirement, Jack enjoyed his weekly lunch meetings with his St. Boniface classmates.
Jack served in the United States Navy from May 17, 1944 to February 1, 1946 on board the USS Evans (DD-552), a Fletcher Class Destroyer, in the Pacific Theatre. The Evans is credited with destroying 14 enemy planes before a coordinated attack by 5 enemy planes was too much for the ship to handle. The May, 1945 attack took the lives of 32 of Jack's shipmates and injured him. The Evans received the Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism in battle. Jack was proud of his service and was able to go on the Honor Flight in 2015. Jack was a lifetime member of the VFW.
After his valiant military service, Jack joined the Bricklayer's Local No. 1 and won the state-wide apprenticeship competition. Jack owned and operated his own business, Singer Masonry, for many years. After closing his business, he spent the rest of his career laying brick or supervising masonry crews (which often included one or more of his sons) on some of the largest jobs in the region.
Jack was a member of St. Boniface Parish and the St. Boniface Men's Club. In his earlier years, Jack was a founding member and long-time parishioner of Holy Redeemer and the Knights of Columbus. Jack loved sports and coaching. He coached the Holy Redeemer Boys 7th/8th Grade Basketball team from 1956 to 1972. He also coached baseball at Holy Redeemer. Jack was an IU fan and later in life a St. Louis Cardinals fan. Jack enjoyed golf and played in the Sterling Golf League. He also went on an annual golfing trip to Myrtle Beach with his friends and sons. Jack, Ginny, their kids and grandkids spent many memorable weekends and summers fishing, swimming, paddle boating, and sitting around the campfire at Lynnville Park Lake in the cabin that Jack and his sons built.
Jack was an officer of the West Maryland Estates Neighborhood Association and enjoyed the company of his neighbors.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years and the mother of his children, Virginia "Ginny" Singer (1999), and second wife, Betty Singer (2012); brothers, Carlton, Clarence, John Leonard, James Willard, Ray, Charles, and Jerry; and sisters, Geneve, Betty, and Barbara.
Jack is survived by his daughter, four sons, 13 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the Holiday Village management and staff, especially Abby, for taking care of Jack and helping him feel at home.
